We’ve long been fans of AudioQuest’s DragonFly Series: portable and versatile USB DACs that offer a super low-cost gateway to high resolution streaming. These little treasures fit in your pocket, connect easily to a PC, Mac or phone and significantly improve audio quality by virtue of their superior DAC.

Cobalt, the flagship DragonFly DAC and headphone amp, improves audio further thanks to an upgraded DAC chip, power supply and microprocessor. This is a quite spectacular little piece of engineering!

Cobalt includes a form-fitting DragonTail female USB-A to male USB-C adaptor (using AudioQuest’s Carbon-level cable) for easy connection to Android phones. For iPhones, you’ll need to buy a Lightning adaptor. And whilst portable audio is Cobalt’s forte, it can also be used to connect to an amplifier or powered speakers using a 3.5mm to 2 x RCA cable.

The tech
Cobalt improves on DragonFly Red and Black performance through it’s new, more advanced ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip with a minimum-phase slow roll-off filter for more natural sound. Microchip’s superb PIC32MX274 microprocessor draws less current and increases processing speed by 33%. Improved power-supply filtering that specifically increases immunity to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular noise.

AudioQuest reduced the DragonFly Cobalt price from £299 to £179.95 as a Christmas promotion last month and has now frozen the new low price. An absolute bargain!
